Toilet Repair and Installation
Toilet repairs are frequently within the capability of the home owner or maintenance personnel. Economy class toilets have many serviceable parts that are commonly available and require a minimum of expertise for installation. Sometimes, repairing a toilet is not practical or desirable. Parts for most older toilets can still be obtained but are occasionally very expensive. Toilets more than ten years old often have mineral build-up in the channels that direct water from the tank to the bowl–this inhibits effective flushing. Older toilets can also harbor bacteria to the extent that no procedure will remove the unpleasant odor. Toilets dating back 30 years or more are water guzzlers that use 5 gallons per flush.
Installing or replacing a toilet can be routine or fairly time consuming depending on the circumstances. If the toilet supply, drain connection, and flooring are in good shape, a toilet installation or replacement will usually take an hour and a half to two hours, and the procedure would be substantially quicker if adjustments after installation were not required. Any substandard condition related to the toilet set should be corrected concurrently with or prior to toilet replacement. A corroded closet flange, poorly connected closet bolts, or warped or unstable flooring, can cause your toilet to lose a firm connection or seal with the drainage system, or result in rocking. Visible or latent water damage is a common result. To minimize the possibility of incurring substantial charges for a toilet replacement with related work, have a licensed plumber attend to any problem with a toilet installation as soon as it is noticed.
